As free-to-play games go, this one's very, very good: excellent graphics, a score inspired by the classics, and always something new coming up.
I have two major quibbles, however.
The first is technical: at last check, this app is not compatible with external storage, and all those fancy graphics and tunes will chew your internal storage up in a hurry. Getting "Low Storage" warnings when I've got 50+ gigs free on my SD card is just above insulting.
Compounding that, is a roadblock in the game at Level 43. I have three choices: Win 40M during Free Spins on Wild Arrow, in 100 spins or less; win 20M during Free Spins on Frozen Flame, in 100 spins or less; OR win 40M during (yup) Free Spins on Brave Hearts, in 10 minutes or less. This isn't even designated as a "hard" quest, but there are only three possible ways to pass it: grind the hourly Scatter until I have enough credits for an all-out, Max Bet assault (which will take me a week or two); knock on wood and hope I get lucky on small bets (hah!); or give the mouse a cookie and make a cash buy.
My experience with pay-to-advance decisions on other apps is that once you pony up, forget about advancing for free. As it is, I've had several cases on Level 43 where I'd either hit big, but get no quest credit because it wasn't in Free Spins; get a big win that counted, and which got me achingly close to finishing, but failed because I never got another Free Spin in time; drew 20 Free Spins, and won peanuts; got multiple trips to the pick board in Frozen Flame, and "iced out" (i.e., no Free Spins); gotten a big win to get me less than halfway there, pressed because I was running out of spins, and gotten squeezed; or coughed up ten gems to keep a streak alive in Brave Hearts, only to draw three Free Spins that paid ZERO.
There's only so much taunting I can take; and I am NOT giving this mouse a cookie.
I'll keep at the grindest for now, but my patience has its limits.
So, great graphics and sound (good headphones are a MUST); gameplay that's enjoyable enough; but brought down hard by lack of external storage compatibility and a suspiciously luck-dependent grindfest early on.
UPDATE: FINALLY got struck by metaphorical lightning and passed level 43. So, okay, fine, I'll stick around. Worth noting are some of the recent in-game special events that have been startlingly generous: a couple of recent events have paid out several weeks' worth of VIP status, and knowing what they charge for that...oh, okay, fine. I'll take back some of the initial bellyaching, and gratefully acknowledge some recent event wins; that said, the 3 star review stands. Storage remains a critical concern: the game now takes just under 20% of my internal storage at 0.94 GB on a 5GB Fire. So I'm eventually going to have to migrate my progress, and the only way to do that is via Facebook, which I'm looking forward to like a proctological evaluation.
This app would get five stars from me, and then some, it weren't such a storage hog.
UPDATE 2: It took a while, but I've found a workaround. I've since upgraded to a Fire HD 10 (yup, it looks even better), and I have the biggest SD card it will support. Problem is, this app eventually got so bloated it was taking up 4GB of internal storage, with the bulk of it being data, and none of it would move to the card.
HERE'S THE WORKAROUND: Uninstall and re-download the app itself, but leave EVERYTHING ELSE (data, cache, etc.) alone. Most of the bloat seems to be the result of the various short-term events, which aren't cleared out after they end. I can kinda-sorta understand why that's done, but I don't exactly like it. Regardless, if the app starts hogging your internal storage, clear JUST THE APP out, and then download it again from your app library.
